The Stark County Medical Society Auxiliary-Charitable Fund is accepting applications for the 2023-24 academic year.

Scholarships are awarded to select students who show promise in their chosen health care field of study. Consideration is given to students who are within one to two years of completing their course of study. Students are encouraged to apply once they have completed a year of their professional study.

Applicants must be a resident of Stark County/graduate from a Stark County high school; be nearing completion of a year in an accredited health care program in Ohio; and their completed application must be received by May 1.

One-time scholarships will be awarded for tuition expenses. Financial awards are mailed directly to the applicant's school office of financial aid. Financial assistance available at Portage Lakes Career Center

Portage Lakes Career Center, 4401 Shriver Road, Green, is offering financial assistance to students in its Manufacturing Technologies program, according to a news release.

  • Up to $4,000 in scholarships will be awarded to anyone who enrolls in the Manufacturing Technologies program.
  • A $1,000 cash refund will go to any manufacturing student who completes the entire 600-hour course.
  • A $500 cash refund will go to any manufacturing student who completes 300 hours of the course.
  • A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to veterans and any alumni of Green, Coventry, Manchester or Springfield high schools.
  • A $500 scholarship will be awarded to any current Portage Lakes Career Center high school student who enrolls in a full-time Portage Lakes Career Center Adult Education program by May 30.
  • A $250 scholarship will be awarded to any current Portage Lakes Career Center high school student who enrolls in a part-time Portage Lakes Career Center Adult Education program by May 30.

Lake Township student is Ohio Connections Academy 2023 salutatorian

Emily Owens of Lake Township has been named the salutatorian for Ohio Connections Academy’s Class of 2023 for having the second-highest academic achievement among the graduating class. She will be recognized as class salutatorian during the statewide online school’s graduation ceremony June 3 at the Ohio Theater in Columbus, according to a news release.

Emily enrolled in Ohio Connections Academy in 2020 when her traditional public school was forced to transition to remote learning due to the pandemic. She plans to attend the University of Mount Union in the fall to double major in computer science and data science & analytics, while also studying music.

Turpin scholarship awards dinner May 18

The Ira G. Turpin Memorial Scholarship Committee will hold its scholarship awards dinner at 6 p.m. May 18 at the Holiday Inn Belden Village, 4520 Everhard Road in Jackson Township.
